Does Each Season Of Game Of Thrones Roughly Equal A Book?
Remember the days when Ned Stark was the main man on HBO’s “ Game of Thrones “? For those who were luckily not spoiled on the George R.R. Martin books at the time (we were one of them), seeing the death of this character was one of the biggest shocks of the year.
Despite loving the first season, I had no inclination to read the novels until around the time of the "Blackwater" episode of Season 2, when suddenly I couldn't stop wondering where everything was going. But did I really want to sift through thousands and thousands of pages of description of the kinds of foods they eat at King's Landing? So before the start of Season 3, I was piqued enough to start asking friends, colleagues and acquaintances who were fans of both the show and books whether or not they thought it'd be worth it for a TV show fan to read A Song Of Ice And Fire , having already gotten through over two of the novels in the series. And I received a very wide, passionate range of responses.
The 300 pages removed from the A Game of Thrones manuscript served as the opening of the second book, entitled A Clash of Kings 22 It was released in February 1999 in the United States, 9 with a manuscript length (without appendices) of 1184 pages. 26 A Clash of Kings was the first book of the Ice and Fire series to make the best-seller lists, 17 reaching 13 on the The New York Times Best Seller list in 1999. 29 After the success of the The Lord of the Rings films, Martin received his first inquiries to the rights of the Ice and Fire series from various producers and filmmakers. 17
Even if by some miracle (granted by the enchanted amulet he no doubt keeps hidden beneath his longshoreman's cap) Martin manages to heave out the sixth book in time for a 2016 photo finish, that still doesn't factor in the yearlong production schedule that each season of Game of Thrones requires That means the soonest we'd see Season 6 would be 2018, and then we'd have to wait another five fucking years for Martin to put out the seventh book, putting the series finale somewhere in the realm of 2023.
The revised finished manuscript for A Game of Thrones was 1088 pages long (without the appendices), 26 with the publication following in August 1996. 8 Wheel of Time author Robert Jordan had written a short endorsement for the cover that was influential in ensuring the book's and hence series' early success with fantasy readers. 27 Blood of the Dragon , a pre-release sample novella drawn from Daenerys's chapters, went on to win the 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella. 28
