Directors And Locations Announced For Game Of Thrones Season 5
Although there was plenty of speculation following leaked casting details of several Dornish characters, “ Game of Thrones ” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have now confirmed that season five will pay a visit to Dorne.
Those who want to tread the same grounds as House Stark should explore the area of Downpatrick, County Down, where Castle Ward was used to film parts of the family home. Nearby Audley’s Castle and Woods were the location for the family’s war encampment in Season 1. Farther north you’ll find the setting for Castle Black — the abandoned Magheramorne quarry, which is under proposal to be turned into a center for adventure sports. Heading back to a more comfortable environment, Morocco was used as the primary setting for many of Daenerys’ travels in Season 3. This was actually a revisit for the production team to the area; it was originally used as King’s Landing in the unaired pilot. So those two episodes should be a laugh and a half, basically.
The Thrones season four premiere episode, titled “Two Swords” ( read our review ), set a new ratings record for the already extremely-popular cable series, pulling in 6.6 million viewers – the largest audience that any HBO program has attracted since the finale to The Sopranos aired back in 2007, as well as a 52% increase on the season 3 premiere’s crowd (and that’s not taking into account those who caught the episode during a later showing that same night).
On April 8, 2014, HBO renewed Game of Thrones for a fifth and sixth season. 51 Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) and Michiel Huisman (Daario Naharis) will be promoted to series regular status beginning with season five. 52 The filming of season 5 is set to begin in the end of July 2014. 53 Directors for the fifth season are Michael Slovis (episodes 1 and 2), Mark Mylod (episodes 3 and 4), Jeremy Podeswa (episodes 5 and 6), Miguel Sapochnik (episodes 7 and 8), and David Nutter (episodes 9 and 10). 54 References edit
While it is odd to see so many new faces directing for such an established hit, the new blood may add to the mystique of "Game of Thrones" with a fresh take on the series. In the casting department, the most notable new face will be that of Keisha-Castle Hughes of "Whale Rider" fame playing one of the "Sand Snakes," one of the eight daughters of now deceased Dornish Prince Oberyn Martell. Surely fans remember his head exploding in the second to last episode this year after a scene-stealing run.
